Migraine relief: Peppermint oil

I wanted to share this with you guys so even if only one of my followers suffer from migraines and I can help you, I would be satisfied. I suffer from chronic migraines as I’ve mentioned in a few of my posts and I’ve tried absolutely everything in hopes that it would help me and unfortunately most things do not. Here is something that does ease the pain.

Today is one of those days! I woke up with a migraine that wasn’t so bad at first. Within 30 mins of being awake, it was full blown.

The worst thing ever in life is waking up with a migraine. If you don’t know that feeling ( and I hope you don’t) I can’t even explain to you how bad that is.

I don’t want to take any more pain killers or pills period. They help the most yes but long term how good is this for me? I take way too many pain killers due to my migraines. Unfortunately when I am going through it I would take anything for the pain to go away !

So about two years ago I attended an International Women Show with my mom and came across a booth of a Native man who created his own little peppermint oil with some other plants to relieve migraine pain. It was a roll on stick and of course I was all over that. Like I said willing to try anything lol.

So, I am not going to say that it helped me get rid of the pain but it helped in a way that it numbed my forehead and made the pain less so. I ran out of it rather fast and it’s not available in stores.

I heard about peppermint oil before  but I completely forgot. So this morning walking by a health store on my way to work it came to me! I picked up a bottle of 100% pure peppermint oil for about 9 bucks and this thing may be my new best friend.

You can use peppermint oil for pretty much anything:

Nausea, muscle ache, diarrhea, toothache, gas, bloatness, headaches, morning sickness.

The way you would use it it’s not always the same. It depends on what you are using it for. I will not get into that here for all of these but only for migraines/headaches.

How to use:

Dab a little bit of oil on your fingers and massage into your temples, across forehead, behind your ears and back of your neck.

What it does:

It cools, tingles, soothes and relaxes.

While the peppermint oil does not get rid of the actual pain, what it does is, it distracts you from it.

By cooling and tingling, it numbs the forehead and temples so the pain seems easier. It helps with the nausea that often times accompanies a migraine.

Sometimes it may cause a skin rash, burning or itching so apply only a little at first as a test.

Please do not ingest the concentrated peppermint oil.

  1. I feel your pain. I also suffer from migraines. In fact I’ve had a headache almost every day this week. The medications I have been prescribed haven’t done much. For about 2 years now I have been taking a pain killer that I buy from the Dominican Republic its called Sumigran plus. Before it worked like magic but since I have been taking them for so long I guess my body got used to it and it doesn’t work as quick anymore. Thanks for this post I will definitely try it (but I’ll skip the forehead I have really sensitive skin).
Hope you get well soon =)

    1. Thanks girl. Appreciate that.
About two weeks ago, I had a migraine for 4 days in a row. It was hell. I`ve been suffering from when I was 14 but past 4 years it changed. The location of the pain and the type of pain it is. Apparently it`s normal, my doctor says, for it to change. I never used to have them go on for days and days. Normally i`d get it bad for one day and then after it goes away I`d be left drained and exhausted!
Now it goes on for days and days. So I feel your pain. And it sucks cuz it`s not a pain that you can suck up and go on with your day. It totally handicaps you in every aspect of your life.
And I used to take Zomig and my body also became immune to it and now it doesn`t help.
I also have really sensitive skin but the peppermint oil didn`t affect me in any bad way.
It`s actually starting to go away now . I hope it stays that way.
I hope you feel better as well ! xoxo

  2. Oh you poor girl 😦 hope you get better soon. My favourite use of peppermint oil was in a face toner, it really helped reduce the oily look of my skin. X

    1. Thanks my love. It`s starting to feel slightly better! I have a boat cruise to go to tomorrow so I have to get better otherwise I feel be miserable and that`s a waste of a good outfit I have planned lol

  3. Omg this is so good to know !!! My mother has a migraine literally everyday and they are so bad sometimes I end up taking her to the hospital :/. Nothing has helped her and of course the doctors can’t find anything wrong , dique. I myself also get bad headaches. Well my point is I am going to go pick up some peppermint oil tonight and try this! Thanks again so much , hope you feel better I know it isn’t fun :(. Sending lots of love your way!

    1. Thanks so much girl!

And yes please try it, you and your mom. I hope it really helps you!
I know that most of the time we are shit out of luck because nothing really helps because the migraine has to run its course but at least this makes it a little easier to manage.
You can also put a few drops of it in the water and slowly inhale it. It helps me when I feel nauseous.
I rub so much of it today my entire head is numb hahahaah but it feels so much better.

Let me know how it goes. Once you do try it.

Thanks again for the love and well wishes. xoxo

    1. It’s true. I look at a computer screen all day long at work and it dries out my eyes so I find myself squinting and straining my eyes, which in return gives me a headache… I’ve never gave eye drops a try but I just might now! xoxo

  4. I had to do a lot of scrolling to find this post lol. But I had to report back thank you so much for sharing this, I have been using peppermint oil this entire month (my migraines are out of control). It is so soothing and you were right it did not irritate my skin at all. Great remedy ❤

    1. I am so happy to hear that girl. That’s amazing. It doesn’t get rid of the actual pain but it definitely numbs your head and makes it tingle so it takes away from the pain and helps you at least fall asleep.I have also been dealing with some crazy migraines these past few weeks. Almost every other day and it’s changed locations. Has your migraine ever done that? Normally, mine is on the left side and now it’s on the right! So weird!

      1. Lol mine is opposite. Mostly on the right side but it does move around from time to time but the absolute worst is when my eyes join in and start hurting too, ugh so annoying.

      2. Yup! My eyes have been hurting lately too whenever I get a migraine. It never used to in the past but my doctor said as you age the migraine changes, its location, the intensity, etc but good news is after menopause apparently migraines stop altogether! Something to look forward to 🙂
